Ahmad Rahami, the suspect in Saturday’s bombings in New York and New Jersey, has been charged for the crimes under the use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing, destruction of property and use of a destructive device.

Rahami is originally from Afghanistan, coming to the United States in 1995 as a child after his father arrived seeking asylum.  He became a U.S. citizen in 2011.

In the last five years, Rahami traveled for extended periods to Afghanistan and Pakistan.  In 2011, Rahami spent several weeks in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and Quetta, Pakistan, which is known to be a stronghold of the Taliban.  Two years later in 2013 he returned to Pakistan and stayed for nearly a year, and his brother traveled to Pakistan at around the same time.

When Rahami returned to the US, immigration officials asked him about the travels, and he replied that he was visiting family which satisfied any concerns they may have had.

While he was in Pakistan in 2011, he married a Pakistani woman and filed paperwork to bring her back to the US, and it was approved in 2012.  In 2014, Rahami contacted Congressman Albio Sires’ office from Islamabad, saying he was concerned about his wife’s passport and visa.

Rahami’s wife left the U.S. a few days before Saturday’s attacks, according to law enforcement officials.

A notebook was found on Rahami which mentions the Boston Marathon bombers and Anwar al-Awlaki, the Yemeni-American imam who was a spokesman for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.  Awlaki was killed in 2011 and has been a source of inspiration for many terrorist attacks.

Rahami’s father had called the FBI two years ago when his son was acting violently, accusing him of being a terrorist.  Rahami was jailed for a family dispute where he stabbed one of his relatives, but the FBI never interviewed him and he was never placed in an FBI database of potential terrorists.

Surveillance video from Saturday evening shows Rahami dragging a duffel bag with wheels near the site of the West 23rd street explosion, about 40 minuted before the blast, and 10 minutes later surveillance video showed the same man with the same duffel bag on West 27th Street, near the site of the second bomb.

Rahami was identified Sunday afternoon through a fingerprint.  Evidence from the cell phone on the pressure cooker also led to Rahami’s identification.

He was captured in Linden, N.J., where a bar owner spotted him sleeping in the doorway of his bar.

When officers responded, Rahami started shooting at them, striking an officer in his protective vest, and a chase ensued while Rahami shot at a police car, causing a bullet to graze another officer in the face.  Rahami was then shot multiple times and taken to a hospital for surgery.

Rahami was charged with five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and unlawful weapons charges.

More than 800 immigrants from “countries of concern to national security” are reported mistakenly being granted citizenship in the U.S.

Homeland Security Inspector General John Roth.

Following is summary of this Associated Press article

The U.S. Government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858 immigrants from “countries of concern to national security,” an internal Homeland Security audit reported Monday.  The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general found that the immigrants used different names or birthdates to apply for citizenship and the discrepancies weren’t caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases.

The report does not identify any of the immigrants by name or the countries they came from, but Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said they were all from “special interest countries” which present a national security threat to the United States, or neighboring countries with high rates of immigration fraud.

The emailed statement said the findings reflected a longstanding problem of old paper-based records containing fingerprint information that can’t be searched electronically.  DHS says immigration officials are in the process of uploading those files, and officials review “every file” identified as a case of possible fraud.

The report says fingerprints are missing from federal databases for as many as 315,000 immigrants that have final deportation orders or are fugitive criminals.

The government has known about the information gap since at least 2008 when a Customs and Border Protection official identified 206 immigrants who used different names or other information to gain citizenship or other benefits, but few cases have been investigated.

ICE officials generally haven’t pursued many of those cases in the past because federal prosecutors “generally did not accept immigration benefits fraud cases,”  but ICE says that the Justice department has now agreed to focus on cases involving people who have acquired security clearances, jobs of public trust or other security credentials.

Mistakenly awarding citizenship to someone ordered deported can have serious consequences, because U.S. citizens can apply and receive security clearances and take security-sensitive jobs.

At least three of the immigrants-turned-citizens were able to acquire aviation or transportation worker credentials and access secure areas of airports or maritime facilities and vessels, and a fourth person became a law enforcement officer.  Their credentials were revoked after they were identified as having received citizenship improperly, said the report.

The report recommended that all of the outstanding cases be reviewed and the fingerprints from those cases be added to the government’s database.

After 12,000 Muslim immigrants have been brought into Ontario by the Canadian government, a survey conducted by that province and the city of Toronto shows dislike of the immigrants.  The survey was a part of an educational campaign “to address xenophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiments.”

Three-quarters of Canadians living in the region say that immigrants hold fundamentally different values and a majority believe mainstream Islam promotes violence.

Only one-third of residents have a positive impression of the religion.

Three-quarters of Ontarians wish their country would focus on taking care of its own citizens rather than devoting resources to bringing in and supporting foreign migrants.

53 percent of Ontarians say Canada should accept immigrants only from countries that have similar values, and 74 percent say Canada needs to be more strict about immigrants it accepts into the country.

The Toronto Star, which first reported the survey results, wrote: “While Canada rides a wave of global praise for welcoming Syrian refugees, a new poll suggests we’re also facing a wave of something sinister — Islamophobia.”

Canadian officials who conducted the survey also made claims of “Islamophobia,” saying “There is an epidemic of Islamophobia in Ontario.  Only a third of Ontarians have a positive impression of the religion and more than half feel its mainstream doctrines promote violence (an anomaly compared to other religions).”

Toronto also reports a steady flow of domestic violence complaints from Syrian woman who are willing to come forward to report abuse.

Officer Sylvia Young survived being shot eight times due to wearing a protective vest.

The man then ran away and began firing into a nearby bar, where he struck a security guard in the leg.

As police arrived on the scene, the man grabbed a woman and used her as a human shield before shooting her in the leg and running away again.

The man then shot into a parked car, shooting the woman inside of it seven times and killing her.  A man inside the car was shot but survived.

Three cops eventually cornered the shooter in an alley in a shootout and killed him, with one of the cops, a 56 year old retired police sergeant who now works as a University of Pennsylvania campus officer being shot during the battle.

All three wounded civilians were listed in stable condition on Saturday afternoon.

Officers found a “rambling” hate-filled letter at the scene that was allegedly written by the gunman, which contained anti-police rhetoric and named a parole officer as a target.

The shooter has a lengthy criminal record which consisted of drug possession convictions and being arrested and charged in connection with a gang-related rape in November of 2009, where a woman alleged that she was raped by a group of men who attacked her while she got food.

Detectives are investigating whether Glenn was linked to or inspired by outside groups or accomplices.

A 19-year-old French girl was lured online to a park near the Eiffel Tower, then bound and gagged and raped by three Algerian migrants.

The girl responded to messages of who she thought was a 17 year old Tunisian boy who she initially met at a park close to her home in the Paris suburbs, then she turned up for another date to have a picnic with him when she was attacked.

She was dragged under a bush where a blanket was laid out and then raped by three men who then gagged her, beat her up, and tied her up.

She was found by a couple who were jogging early Monday morning when they heard her making muffled sobbing noises, finding her in deep shock, naked and crying.

Police then used computer data to trace the three men to a hotel in Paris as they were making preparations to leave for Germany.  None of them had official papers, they all claimed to be 17 years old and from Tunisia, and they were seeking asylum, however checks suggested that they a lot older and from Algeria.

The men deny raping the girl, saying it was a “consensual adult relationship” with her.

The leftist mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo announced last week that the city will be opening its first official migrant camp next month, which will have a capacity for 800 beds, kitchens, showers, Wi-fi, a health center with nurses, and a football field.  Most of its residents will be young males.

A pipe bomb exploded at a Marine Corps race in New Jersey

A pipe bomb exploded in a garbage can Saturday morning in a New Jersey beach town of Seaside Park, with the explosion timed to harm participants in a Marine Corps charity run.  Three pipe bomb devices were wired together and set to detonate with a timer, but only one detonated.  The timing of the explosion was set to coincide with the start of the race, but registration problems at the starting line caused the race to be delayed for a few minutes, resulting in nobody being near the bomb when it detonated.

A pregnant 14-year-old was tortured and killed in Afghanistan in July by being burned alive by her in-laws as revenge for her father eloping with their niece

Following is a summary of this DailyMail article

A pregnant 14-year-old was tortured and set on fire by her in-laws because her father eloped with a woman from their family.   She died in a Kabul burn hospital the next week in July 2016.

The killing was an act of revenge after the man had run away with a young cousin of his daughter’s husband when the family agreed to sell her for more money.

The grieving father visited Afghanistan’s capitol in a quest for justice for the killing, rallying with members of his family and women’s rights activists, but he said he had little hope for justice.

Women’s rights activist Veeda Saghari explains that violence against women is ignored in Afghanistan: “.. violence against women such as acid throwing, beating, stoning, informal community tribunal verdicts, burning, forced divorces, forced marriages, forced pregnancies, and forced abortions have reached a peak.”
